We would like to thank all of our partners over the years, for making our work possible:
Background
Shluvim (integration in Hebrew) is committed to assuring equal access to educational opportunities and works towards integrating severely at-risk children into their every-day frameworks. Shluvim goes directly into the school system to help stabilize those suffering from learning, behavioral and emotional difficulties, which are attributed to or exacerbated by living along Israel’s southern border. Approximately 1,500 children aged 3-12 benefit from Shluvim outreach every year; the vast majority come from underprivileged and low-income neighborhoods; and upwards of 50% are Ethiopian, a community contending with its own cultural integration challenges.
The Shluvim Association was established in 2004 to provide educational, emotional, and social support to at-risk and disadvantaged children and youth, living in the south of Israel—a region vulnerable to regular rocket fire from Gaza and the frequent launching pad for many IDF military operations. The organization, the only one of its kind, works within the educational system and with individual family units to ensure that high-risk children are able to function and thrive within their schools, families and communities.
The associated trauma of living under perpetual threat of attack has a profound and lingering impact on the Israeli psyche, with between 70 to 94 percent of children in the region diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Life in the region means that children suffering other types of psycho-social disorders and stress, perhaps resulting from the birth of a sibling, a divorce, illness, a death in the family, limited financial means, or domestic violence suffer from an increased risk due to the effects of multiple trauma. Life in the region also means that the chronic nature of such stress must be dealt with in a systematic way, taking into consideration the needs of both individuals and entire communities, which is what Shluvim sets out to do.
Shluvim has developed several highly effective programs, conducted in cooperation and with the endorsement of Israel’s educational authorities.
